Weekend predictions: Primate and Greenland not likely to topple Avatar

The first “non-Holiday” weekend of 2026 sees two new releases with aspirations of a win at the box office. However, Primate and Greenland 2: Migration both look as though they will fall quite a bit short of Avatar’s earnings on its fourth weekend, with Primate likely to take the consolation prize of having 2026’s best opening so far, even if it doesn’t have a lock on second place on the overall chart at this point.

It was once again a runaway for Avatar: Fire and Ash at the weekend box office, securing over $41 million in its third frame while catapulting itself over the $300 million mark domestically. Zootopia 2’s haul of $19.38 million landed it in the number two position and gave Walt Disney the 1-2 punch at the box office. This weekend brings about two new contenders who are set to take aim at toppling Avatar from its throne.

Avatar: Fire and Ash has sailed past $1 billion at the global box office this weekend, with a $40 million contribution from North America taking it to $306 million, and another $777.1 million internationally taking it to $1.083 billion worldwide to date. It will have another strong hold here, down 37% in its third weekend, and it is off just 29% internationally, according to Disney. Zootopia 2 and The Housemaid are both enjoying excellent holds this weekend (down 4% and 3% respectively), and will take second and third spot on the chart.
