Our DVD and Blu-ray sales estimates are based on weekly retail surveys, which we use to build a weekly market share estimate for each title we are tracking. The market share is converted into a weekly sales estimate based on industry reports on the overall size of the market, including reports published in Media Play News.

For example, if our weekly retail survey estimates that a particular title sold 1% of all units that week, and the industry reports sales of 1,500,000 units in total, we will estimate 15,000 units were sold of that title. The consumer spending estimate is based on the average sales price for the title in the retailers we survey.

We refine our estimates from week to week as more data becomes available. In particular, we adjust weekly sales figures for the quarter once the total market estimates are published by the Digital Entertainment Group. Figures will therefore fluctuate each week, and totals for individual titles can go up or down as we update our estimates.

Because sales figures are estimated based on sampling, they will be more accurate for higher-selling titles.

Theater counts: Captain America soars into 4,105 theaters

February 13th, 2025

Captain America: Brave New World

Despite the arrival of two newcomers to the big screen, it was a rather slow weekend at the domestic box office with Dog Man scoring just shy of $14 million, taking top billing in its second weekend and stifling the debuts of Love Hurts and Heart Eyes, which closed out the weekend with earnings of $5.8 million and $8.31 million, respectively. This weekend brings on two more films making their first foray into cinemas, including Captain America: Brave New World. More...

Theater counts: Dog Man once again secures widest release in its second weekend

February 6th, 2025

Dog Man

Dog Man opened last weekend to a rather unexpected good fortune as the animated feature pawed its way to a solid $36 million in its theatrical debut while outpacing the other newcomer, Companion, by nearly $27 million over the three-day period. To remain number one this weekend, however, the film will have to fend off not only another pair of newcomers but also compete against Super Bowl LIX. More...

Theater counts: Dog Man fetches up 3,885 locations in its theatrical debut

January 30th, 2025

Dog Man

Last weekend belonged to newcomer Flight Risk at the domestic box office as the Mel Gibson-directed thriller toppled Mufasa: The Lion King from the lead position by scoring $11.58 million over the three-day period, to the latter’s $8.59 million. This weekend looks to once again belong to the newcomers, led by the animated film Dog Man. More...

Theater counts: Mufasa holds on as widest release for another weekend

January 23rd, 2025

Mufasa: The Lion King

Last weekend’s box office race was tight as expected, with just over $1.1 million separating the top film from the third place finisher. Despite two new entries making their chart debuts, Mufasa: The Lion King once again found itself at the top of the heap, biting off over $12 million in its fifth weekend on the big screen and crossing the $200 million mark domestically. The film also passed the $600 million worldwide threshold on Wednesday, currently enjoying $600.99 million in global receipts. As another batch of wide releases make their way into theaters, Mufasa will once again take the crown as the widest release in the land. More...

Theater counts: Mufasa fends off Wolf Man to remain widest release

January 16th, 2025

Mufasa: The Lion King

Despite being the widest release in the land, Mufasa: The Lion King came up a bit short in winning the weekend box office battle against newcomer Den of Thieves 2: Pantera, with the latter taking the crown, $15.02 million to the former’s $14.22 million over the three days. With the debut of Wolf Man this weekend, it will take a hulking effort for Mufasa to recapture the top spot at the box office. More...

Theater counts: Mufasa reigns supreme entering its fourth weekend

January 9th, 2025

Mufasa: The Lion King

For the past few weeks, the battle of the box office has pitted Sonic The Hedgehog 3 against Mufasa: The Lion King, with the latter outpacing the former during the past seven days, but still playing catch-up by about $18 million in total domestic gross due to a solid performance out of the gate by the former early in its run. This weekend will feature a third contender in the way of yet another sequel, this time in the form of Den of Thieves 2: Pantera. More...

Theater counts: Mufasa roars into the new year the widest release

January 2nd, 2025

Mufasa: The Lion King

While the new year is finally here, in terms of new films opening in theaters, we will have to wait another week to see some fresh faces make their way onto the big screen. This weekend will be much of the same, as the top three films from last weekend will claw their way in search of a box office win. The past weekend witnessed a narrow victory for Sonic The Hedgehog 3, as the speedster raced past Mufasa: The Lion King by a rather narrow $37.01 million to $36.8 million margin over the three-day period. More...

Holiday theater counts: Mufasa repels a batch of midweek newcomers to remain widest release

December 24th, 2024

Mufasa: The Lion King

The peak of the holiday season is among us, and per usual, there is no shortage of films available to spark the interest of nearly every moviegoer. Due to the Christmas holiday falling on a Wednesday this year, we see an array of newcomers hitting theaters midweek, looking to take on the current box office victors. It will be an uphill battle, however, as Sonic The Hedgehog 3 and Mufasa: The Lion King are poised to finish out their opening week in first and second place, respectively. More...

Theater counts: Mufasa roars into 4,100 theaters

December 19th, 2024

Mufasa: The Lion King

For nearly a month now, one couldn’t look at the box office charts without seeing either Wicked or Moana 2 holding the top position. However, that all looks to change this weekend with two new franchise films clawing their way into theaters, poised to battle in an already crowded holiday season. More...

Theater counts: Moana makes waves as the widest release for its third weekend

December 12th, 2024

Moana 2

Weekend box office winner, Moana 2, firmly held onto its place atop the North American box office, repelling an onslaught of newcomers (and current challengers). The sequel collected just over $51 million over the three-day period for a 12-day total of $299 million and has since crossed the $300 million mark, currently enjoying a domestic total of $310 million. Two newcomers make their entrance this weekend prepared to challenge the reigning champ for the title. More...

Theater counts: Despicable Me 4 remains the widest release entering its second frame

July 11th, 2024

Despicable Me 4

It was a solid debut for the number one film at the box office, as Despicable Me 4 dominated with five-day domestic earnings of $122.6 million after opening in 4,030 theaters on July 3rd. The latest installment has since turned up another $34 million, taking its eight-day total to $157.28 million. As no mega blockbuster films are set to open this weekend, Despicable Me 4 and Inside Out 2 should once again find themselves in the number one and number two positions, respectively, at the box office. More...

Theater counts: Top Gun: Maverick soars into theaters as the widest release in history

May 26th, 2022

Top Gun: Maverick

After 36 years, the wait is finally over as Top Gun: Maverick arrives in theaters, and does so in high-flying fashion as it is propelled to the top of the all-time widest release chart by debuting in 4,735 theaters. Tom Cruise returns as Captain Pete “Maverick” Mitchell as he is tasked with training a new group of Top Gun recruits to go on a dangerous mission, while confronting elements from his past. Top Gun: Maverick isn’t the only wide release hitting theaters this week however as The Bob’s Burgers Movie enters the fray in 3,425 locations. More...

My Cousin Rachel

It’s one of those weeks that are deceptively busy. The biggest new release of the week is Wonder Woman, but it is only coming out on Video on Demand. The biggest overall release is the The Lion King franchise on separate Blu-ray releases, but it’s at least a double-dip on Blu-ray. I think a triple-dip on Blu-ray. If it weren’t for these circumstances, they would be clear Pick of the Week contenders. Without those two movies, the next best is... My Cousin Rachel on Blu-ray. Its reviews are not quite Pick of the Week level, but it is the best of what we've got. More...

The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly

Alien: Covenant is the biggest release on this week’s list, but the franchise is off its peak and has been for a long time. As for Pick of the Week contenders, there are not a lot of them. If I were to stretch the definition, Food Wars: Season One is great, if you are into that subgenre of Anime. Descendants 2 is arguably better than the original, but the DVD isn’t going to really appeal to those outside the target audience. That leaves The Good, the Bad and the Ugly: 50th Anniversary Blu-ray as the clear winner for Pick of the Week. More...
