Our DVD and Blu-ray sales estimates are based on weekly retail surveys, which we use to build a weekly market share estimate for each title we are tracking. The market share is converted into a weekly sales estimate based on industry reports on the overall size of the market, including reports published in Media Play News.

For example, if our weekly retail survey estimates that a particular title sold 1% of all units that week, and the industry reports sales of 1,500,000 units in total, we will estimate 15,000 units were sold of that title. The consumer spending estimate is based on the average sales price for the title in the retailers we survey.

We refine our estimates from week to week as more data becomes available. In particular, we adjust weekly sales figures for the quarter once the total market estimates are published by the Digital Entertainment Group. Figures will therefore fluctuate each week, and totals for individual titles can go up or down as we update our estimates.

Because sales figures are estimated based on sampling, they will be more accurate for higher-selling titles.

The Numbers Business Report: 2026 Q2 Box Office Prediction

September 29th, 2025

The latest issue of The Numbers Business Report continues to build out our early predictions for 2026, this time shifting attention to the second quarter of next year. Our feature article provides our first full prediction, as well as detailed movie-by-movie forecasts for the major releases scheduled for that period.

Similar to previous years, 2026 should feature several titles earning over $100 million, primarily from established and highly successful franchises. Examples include Super Mario Bros., whose previous film grossed over $500 million domestically, making it the highest-grossing animated movie of its year, and Toy Story, a franchise that has accumulated more than $1.4 billion domestically over the past 30 years. Other notable franchises with major releases include Star Wars, Scary Movie, and Mortal Kombat.

Theater counts: Godzilla vs. Kong set to dominate another weekend

April 15th, 2021

Godzilla vs. Kong

Godzilla vs. Kong will once again lead the pack this week as all newcomers are opening in limited release. The film played in 3,084 locations last week, and we do not expect it to lose much, if any steam this week. The monster action movie has been the biggest film of the pandemic, earning over $70m domestically, surpassing another Warner Bros., Tenet, which ended its run on January 1, 2021 with a domestic gross of $58m. Despite the lack of wide releases this week, the majority of the films on our list have increased theaters this week, showing more positive signs of the movie industry getting back to business. In limited release this week is Monday, starring Sebastian Stan and Denise Gough, showing in 54 locations. More...

VOD Releases: Go on a World Tour from Your Own Home

April 9th, 2020

Trolls: World Tour

This could turn out to be the most important weekend for the movie industry in decades. It’s the weekend Trolls: World Tour comes out on the home market. This is the first major motion picture with a planned saturation level release that is not being pushed back due to the Covid-19 outbreak, but is instead coming out on Video on Demand. In a few years, we might look back at this week as the week the movie industry changed fundamentally, if this film is a big enough hit to convince studios that theatrical releases are unnecessary. DVD and Blu-ray Releases for October 14th, 2014

October 14th, 2014

In some ways, it is a great week on the home market, as there are several excellent releases worth picking up. In other ways, it is an even better week, because there are so few releases and almost no filler. The only downside is trying to select a release for Pick of the Week, as there are a number of competitors. One of the biggest releases of the week is X-Men: Days of Future Past on DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack and it is also one of the best. Other contenders include Mr. Peabody & Sherman on DVD, Blu-ray Combo Pack, 3D Combo Pack, Fargo: Season One on DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack, and Witching and Bitching on DVD. Strangely, I'm still waiting for the screeners for all four films. In the end, I literally rolled a dice to determine the winner and it was X-Men: Days of Future Past. More...

DVD and Blu-ray Releases for January 8th, 2013

January 7th, 2013

After two weeks of almost nothing worth talking about on the home market, there's plenty to talk about this week. ... Actually, to be totally honest, it is another slow week, it's just not painfully slow. (Also, I'm unwilling to pad the list like I had to do the last couple weeks.) Worse still, because the holiday just ended, a lot of the screeners that were supposed to arrive have not, including a few Pick of the Week contenders. Compliance, Dredd, and Frankenweenie are all contenders that are currently late, and I really don't like choosing a late screener. In the end, it was literally a coin toss between Archer: Season Three on DVD or Blu-ray and Red Dwarf: X on DVD or Blu-ray. And the coin said... Red Dwarf: X. More...
